Skin Resurfacing

VIEW BEFORE & AFTER

Skin Resurfacing

Healthy skin is critical to achieving a natural, youthful look. Laser surgery, chemical peeling, or microneedling can be performed as a standalone procedure, or in conjunction with eyelid or facial surgery, to rejuvenate and refresh the skin.

Skin resurfacing uses focused light, chemical peels, or microscopic needles to remove the surface layers of the skin, which contain the wrinkles, folds, and scars which blemish the skin. This allows new, healthy skin to be regenerated without any of the unsightly marks of age or sun damage.

Different types of treatments can address different types of blemishes, and have different recovery times. We will examine your skin and together, you will come up with a plan for optimal skin rejuvenation.

What are my skin resurfacing options?

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure wherein laser energy is used to remove the uppermost layers of the skin. There are two types of laser skin resurfacing — CO2 laser skin resurfacing and erbium laser skin resurfacing.

  • CO2 Laser Resurfacing: In this technique, short pulses of light energy and light beams scan your skin to remove the uppermost, damaged skin tissues with minimal damage. This paves the way for smoother, more even-textured, and firmer skin tissues. CO2 laser resurfacing is suitable for enlarged oil glands, scars, warts, and wrinkles.
  • Erbium Laser Resurfacing: In this technique, laser energy is used to soften mild-to-moderate fine lines and wrinkles from the face and hands. This laser also vaporizes the uppermost layers of the skin and paves the way for softer, smoother skin. But it causes fewer side effects and involves minimal downtime because it doesn’t burn the surrounding skin tissues.

Laser skin resurfacing is performed as an in-office and outpatient procedure. Depending on your specific goals, the surgeon may apply local anesthesia or topical anesthesia to ensure comfort. The surgeon will move the laser device over the treatment areas, delivering highly concentrated laser energy into the skin. After all the treatment areas are covered, the doctor will cover the treatment areas in bandages and allow you to return home.

Chemical Peeling

Chemical peeling is a non-invasive procedure wherein chemical formulations are used to scrub off the uppermost layers of the skin. The cosmetic surgeon applies a unique formulation of skincare products and acids, such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acids. These chemical formulations make the uppermost layers of your skin flake off in a few days, paving the way for smoother, firmer skin underneath. Furthermore, chemical peels also address the root cause of your pigmentation problems, blemishes, and other concerns, thereby improving your overall skin quality.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation technique used for collagen regeneration. During this procedure, the cosmetic surgeon uses a special microneedling device to make microscopic channels on the skin’s surface. This triggers your body’s innate skin cell regeneration and collagen production capabilities. Your body responds to these micro-injuries by increasing collagen production, which, in turn, makes your skin appear smoother for firmer. Microneedling doesn’t involve any downtime — you can resume your daily activities and work immediately.

Will I be asleep for surgery?

Dr. Ramesh is typically able to perform these delicate surgeries under IV sedation, or twilight anesthesia. This avoids the risks of general anesthesia and being put to sleep completely, while still preventing you from feeling any pain.

What is recovery like?

Surgery takes between 30 – 60 minutes, and patients can go home afterwards. Usually, patients have redness and mild swelling in the treated areas for 1-2 days to 2 weeks, depending on the treatment. Patients must keep the treated areas lubricated with topical ointments and moisturizers until the skin is completely rejuvenated. Pain is minimal and controlled with oral medication.

With deep laser resurfacing, most patients are ready for social events in 3-4 weeks, and “wedding-ready” by 2 months.
