The Patient Experience

What is surgery like?

Surgery is performed at an outpatient surgery center, so that you can rest and recover in the comfort of your own home or hotel after surgery. Surgery is performed under general anesthesia, and Dr. Ramesh requires board-certified anesthesiologists (physicians) to be present for the entirety of the case. Surgical time is typically 1-1.5 hours per eye for orbital decompression. Eyelid surgery or other cosmetic surgeries can add additional time to the procedure. Dr. Ramesh administers long-acting numbing medicine after surgery, so that you are completely numb for 24-48 hours after surgery.

Are both eyes done at the same time?

While Dr. Ramesh prefers to perform orbital decompression on the eyes separately, he understands that for patients who travel from a distance, this may not be possible and in certain instances will operate on both eyes together.

What is recovery like?

Patients have significant bruising and swelling (like having black eyes) for 7-10 weeks after surgery. Swelling improves slowly, with 30% improvement at 1 week, 70% improvement at 4-6 weeks, and 99% improvement at 3 months. Pain is typically minimal, and Dr. Ramesh prescribes pain and anti-nausea medicine as needed to help you though your recovery.

You will be ready to go out of the house and complete normal errands 1 week after surgery. You will be ready to go to work in 7-10 days. You will be ready to pose for formal photography (e.g., a wedding) in 3 months.
